Verify your domain and change name servers at Yahoo! Small Business

Verify your domain and change name servers at Yahoo! Small Business

Follow these instructions if:
  1. You have your own domain and want to set it up to work with Office 365.
  2. Yahoo! Small Business is your DNS hosting provider or your domain registrar.
  3. You want Office 365 to manage your Office 365 DNS records for you. (If you prefer, you can manage all your Office 365 DNS records at Yahoo! Small Business.)
Here’s what you need to do:

Find your DNS records at Yahoo! Small Business

Use the steps in the following table to get to the right spot in Yahoo! Small Business to edit your DNS records.
Task Action
Unlock your domain.
  1. In your browser, go to your domains at Yahoo! Small Business and sign in.
  2. On the Domains page, in the section for the domain you are working with, choose Domain Control Panel.
  3. On the Domain Control Panel page, scroll to the Edit Domain Locking section. If your domain is locked:
    1. Choose Edit Domain Locking, and then choose Unlock Domain.
    2. Choose Unlock Domain.
    3. In the confirmation message, choose Unlock Domain again.
    4. On the Domain Locking page, in the upper left corner, choose Domain Control Panel.
Go to the page that has the DNS records for your domain. On the Domain Control Panel page, in the Domain Name section, choose Manage Advanced DNS Settings.

Add a record to verify that you own the domain

If Yahoo! Small Business is your DNS hosting provider, to add a record at Yahoo! Small Business to help Office 365 confirm that you own your domain, use the steps in the following table.
Note    This record is used only to confirm that you own your domain; it doesn’t affect anything else.
Task Action
Gather information from Office 365.
  1. Sign in to Office 365 with your work or school account.
  2. Go to the Manage domains page.
  3. On the Manage domains page, in the Action column for the domain that you are verifying, choose Start setup.
Note   If you haven’t yet added a domain, see Add your domain to Office 365.
  4. On the Confirm that you own domain_name page, in the I'll choose the company from this list drop-down list, choose General instructions, and then click Next.
  5. From the table, copy the Destination or Points to Address value. You’ll need it for the next step.
We recommend copying and pasting this value, so that all of the spacing stays correct.
Add a mail exchanger record (MX record) at Yahoo! Small Business.
  1. On the Yahoo! Small Business website, choose manage DNS settings.
For more information, see Find your DNS records at Yahoo! Small Business.
  2. Scroll down to the MX Records section.
  3. Choose Change MX Records .
  4. Copy the MX information into the empty record:
    • Mail Server Host Name: use the Points to address.
    • Priority
Save your changes.
  • Choose Submit.
If you’re done making DNS changes, lock your domain.
  1. Choose Domain Control Panel.
  2. Choose Edit Domain Locking.
  3. Choose Lock Domain.
  4. On the confirmation page, choose Lock Domain again.
Verify your domain in Office 365. Important   Wait about 15 minutes before you do this, so the record you just created can update across the Internet.
Go back to Office 365 and follow the steps below to request a verification check. The check looks for the TXT record you added to Yahoo! Small Business in the previous step. When it finds the correct TXT record, the domain is verified.
  1. Go to the Manage domains page.
  2. On the Manage domains page, in the Action column for the domain you are verifying, choose Start setup.
  3. On the next page, choose Done, verify now and then, in the confirmation dialog box, choose Finish.

Change your domain’s name server records

When you get to the last step of the wizard, you have one task remaining. To complete setting up your domain with Office 365, you change your domain’s NS records at your domain registrar to point to the Office 365 primary and secondary name servers. Then, because Office 365 hosts your DNS, we can set up the required records for you so that email, Lync, and your public website work with your domain.
Caution    When you change your domain’s NS records to point to the Office 365 name servers, all the services that are currently associated with your domain are affected. If you skipped any steps of the wizard, or if you’re using your domain for blogs, shopping carts, or other services, there are additional steps that are required to make sure that this transition doesn't result in service downtime, such as loss of email access or your current website being inaccessible.
For example, here are some additional steps that might be required for email and website hosting:
  1. Move all email addresses that use your domain to Office 365 before you change your NS records. Learn more: Why should I add users to Office 365 while I'm adding my domain?
  2. Adding an additional domain? You can take steps while you add the domain to keep its website hosted where the site is hosted now.
  3. If you have a website already, you can choose to keep your website with your current hosting provider.
In the last step of the wizard, use the steps in the following table to change your domain’s name servers at your domain registrar.
Task Action
Go to the area on your domain registrar’s website where you can edit name server records.
  1. On the Yahoo! Small Business website, choose manage DNS settings.
For more information, see Find your DNS records at Yahoo! Small Business.
  2. Scroll down to the Name Servers section.
Change your name server records to point to the Office 365 name servers.
  1. Choose Change Nameservers.
  2. In the Primary row, in the Nameserver Hostname column, type or paste the following value:
    ns1.bdm.microsoftonline.com
  3. In the Secondary row, in the Nameserver Hostname column, type or paste the following value:
    ns1.bdm.microsoftonline.com
  4. Tip   You should use at least two name server records. If there are any other name servers listed, you can either delete them, or change them to ns3.bdm.microsoftonline.com and ns4.bdm.microsoftonline.com.
If there are any other name servers specified, and you want to delete them, select the text in the Nameserver Hostname column, and then press the Delete key.
Save your changes.
  • Choose Submit.
If you’re done making DNS changes, lock your domain.
  1. Choose Domain Control Panel.
  2. Choose Edit Domain Locking.
  3. Choose Lock Domain.
  4. In the confirmation page, choose Lock Domain again.
Your name server record updates may take up to 72 hours to update through the DNS system. Your custom domain will be ready to use with Office 365 after the updates complete.
