Yahoo Web Hosting Review

Yahoo Web Hosting is a great option for small businesses with no experience in web coding or site design. The web hosting service’s functionality and tools are geared towards beginners, including a simplified control panel and site builder that help you create a website in three easy steps. While its hosting packages are hardly noteworthy, Yahoo Web Hosting shines when it comes to site creation tools.
Yahoo’s three web hosting packages provide nothing we haven’t seen before; they each come with an allotted amount of disk space, data transfer and email addresses. Unlimited hosting is only available under the premier plan, with unlimited disk space and bandwidth. Each plan also comes with free domain registration or transfer, which is pretty standard among web hosting services.
Yahoo’s standout feature is its easy-to-use control panel and integrated site builder for creating websites. The builder is intuitive and walks you step-by-step through the site creation process with three easy steps: Pick Your Look, Personalize and Publish. You can choose from a variety of engaging templates. However, the builder still offers advanced features like Perl, PHP and MySQP support. It works with FrontPage and accepts full HTML content from programs like Dreamweaver. It is also compatible with WordPress, MoveableType and PhpBB Bulletin and supports most media types including audio and video files.
Other than its stellar site creation tools, the web hosting service doesn’t provide much else. It lacks most of the advanced features we sought, including custom cron jobs, customizable error pages, a file manager and comprehensive server access. Furthermore, if you want to publish an eCommerce site, Yahoo provides a shared SSL certificate, but you’ll have to pay for third-party shopping cart software.
When it comes to email functionality, this web hosting service proves mediocre. Depending on the hosting package you select, you’ll get either 250, 500 or 1000 email accounts. Most of the other web hosting services we reviewed provide unlimited email accounts. The service also provides spam and virus protection and unlimited storage. You can access these features through a web-based interface or through a POP3 type email account such as Outlook or Eudora.
What Yahoo Web Hosting lacks in features and functionality, it makes up for with comprehensive help and support, something we’d expect from a company as large and well-known as Yahoo. Support via telephone is available 24/7, and you can find additional help through a myriad of online resources including FAQs, tutorials and a searchable knowledgebase. The only thing lacking that we would have liked to see is live chat, a convenient option that would allow users to contact the company online for immediate assistance.
